Upton Beall Sinclair Jr. was born on September 20, 1878 in Baltimore, Maryland. Even though his family came from noble descent, they were not rich. When he was a child, his father, an alcoholic, would often go out to bars and drink. Upton would have to drag his father home. He loved to read books as a child to entertain himself.
When he was 10, he moved to New York. There his impressive intelligence began to shine. In just three years, he was ready to go off to college, at the young age of 14. He attended the City College of New York. While there, Sinclair began his long career of being a journalist. He wrote short stories, articles for the newspaper and dime journals to pay for his education. He graduated from the City College of New York in 1897 and went onto Columbia University as a graduate student.
