The Jungle was published on February 26, 1906. The book was initially rejected by five different publishers because of its gory and controversial content. Interestingly, Upton Sinclair wrote the book as a fictional story about an immigrant worker in the meat factories. This was done so that more people would buy the book and read about what was happening in these factories. The Jungle became a best seller and was translated into seventeen different languages. People didn't see what Upton Sinclair wanted them to see. Instead of caring about how these workers were treated, the public only became outraged over the disgusting things that they were eating. Upton Sinclair once said, "I aimed at the public's hearts, and by accident I hit it in the stomach."
